7STARLAKE Announces Intel Comet Lake Core i9 Series IEC 61850-3 Power Automation Computer SCHX4!
- September 30, 2020

SCHX4 is an IEC61850-3 compliant microgrid computer which is capable of distributing energy productively so that energy loss is evitable. It is thoroughly designed with a highly efficient and powerful computing performance driven by the Intel® 10th Gen, Cometlake-S i9-10900TE. Intel® Core™i9-10900TE (10 Cores ) can operate up to 4.50 GHz(max). This processor is equipped with 20 MB Smart Cache to decrease the overall cache miss rate. The Intel® Core™i9-10900TE processor effectively operates with 10 Cores and 20 Threads, supporting the best performance at high speeds. In addition, SCHX4 accepts the extend range of temperature from -20°C to 60°C. The harsh environment survivability feature allows the computer to even operate full speed successfully at 50°C environment.

The microgrid eco system is installed so as to monitor and communicate with diversified energy sources such as renewables energy, generators, utility grids, and storage. Because of the demand of massive collection from a huge colossal data, SCHX4 must perform stable and be able to rapidly transmit between devices during the collection of metering, current status and events, and fault reports; meanwhile, SCHX4 has to also speedily send the compiled information upstream to a control centre, and then transfer commands issued by the control centre to other devices.

Moreover, integrating TPM and FTDI module, operating systems can generate an authentication, the so called security redundancy, to protect keys, data or systems. In modern era, the connection between microgrid and smart cities requires strong protection to ensure both utilities and data safety. With TPM on board and FDTI as one more security layer, SCHX4 provides double security to highly profound system.

Key benefits

1. The Beacon for Energy Saving-Microgrid

One of the main highlights that stand out is the utilisation of microgrid. With the escalating threat of climate change, the advancement of alternative energy sources has been triggered to meet clean, sustainable standards. Therefore, smart grid comes to the rescue. A microgrid is a self-contained power system that has the ability to locally generate, distribute, and store energy. It is a localised energy grid as well, which is generally linked to the main grid but can disconnect automatically and function as its own independent grid when necessary. A fully functioning microgrid computer system is essential for ensuring all processes work correctly and that energy is always being distributed in a productive approach. PERFECTRON provides cutting-edge solutions for substation automation and microgrid applications for not only public organisations but also private sectors. With our extensive experiences in this industry and our innovative work on the latest technologies, we are able to develop market-specific solutions for computing and communication applications in this field.

2. Dual Ability

2.1 Security Redundancy

Data security relates to protecting data, in a database or a file storage system, from unwanted activities such as cyberattacks or data breaches. By integrating TPM module, SCH200 operating systems can require an authentication to protect keys, data or systems.

2.2 Power Redundancy

To ensure continuity of the service, SCH200 features wide power range to keep the system’s reliability and you can expect longer life-span as well. Sudden drop or surge of power posts absolutely no threat to this smart system.

2.3 Data Redundancy

Data redundancy offers an extra layer of protection and reinforces the backup by replicating data to an additional system. RAID function supports an assortment to help protect or speed up the performance of a computer's disk storage. RAID 0/1 function makes SCH200 to archive it.

2.4 Network Redundancy

PRP/HSR network will be required as an efficient and cost effective solution in order to construct a seamless/bumpless communication infrastructure to ensure maximum system availability.

3. Stellar Performance of 10th Comet Lake

SCHX4 is powered by 10th-gen Comet Lake. Compared with Core 9th-gen Coffee Lake, Comet Lake-S has up to 10 CPU cores. It’s built on the now very ripe 14nm transistor node which contributes partially the reason for its high frequency. For the hyperthreading feature, it is applied on almost all models, and the issues that plagued 9th-gen chips no longer exist. As for the processors' operating frequency, Comet Lake single core turbo boost is up to 5.3 GHz, which is 300 MHz faster across the board compared to the Coffee Lake refresh of 2019. For the memory support, all Intel Comet Lake-S processors support dual-channel DDR4 RAM; the higher-end Core i9 products support up to 2,966MHz, while everything else supports up to DDR4 2,666MHz.

Generally speaking, Comet Lake-S can be seen as a re-optimisation of Intel’s Coffee Lake processor – which is a refresh of Kaby Lake – which in turn is an upgraded Sky Lake. The processor can still remain at full speed at 50°C up to 60°C, which guarantees a smooth operation for SCHX4.

4. The Gravity of IEC61850-3 in Energy Management

As the international standard for power substation automation systems, IEC 61850 defines the communication between devices in the substation and related system requirements. Thanks to IEC61850 standard, a unified communication protocol in power automation, communication and the engineering process are now being standardized worldwide. IEC-61850 standard enables the integration of the equipment and systems from different suppliers, reducing the burden on the configuration and maintenance of these systems. The protocol also meets utilities’ requirements for long-term system expandability.

IEC 61850-3 defines the general requirements, mainly regarding construction, design and environmental conditions for utility communication and automation IEDs (intelligent electronic devices) and systems in power plant and substation environments. These general requirements are in line with requirements for IEDs used in similar environments, for example measuring relays and protection equipment. In addition, IEC 61850-3 standard ensures that if the device is subjected to high levels of EMI, shock, or vibrations, data will still be successfully transmitted.
